An easy / basic yellow dal recipe, known as goda varan in the konkani cuisine, for the days when you just want a simple, yet comforting dal.

Pair this with rice and a sabzi on the side, like this green beans stir fry or bhindi masala, for a wholesome and delicious meal.

How to Make This Yellow Dal Recipe

    • Take ¼ cup of toor dal and ¼ cup of yellow moong dal, and properly wash and rinse it, and strain away the excess water.
    • Pressure cook it with 3 times the water. I usually use my Instant Pot to boil dal, in which for a total ½ cup of dal, I use 1½ cup water, and pressure cook on high for 12 minutes, and then let all the pressure release naturally from the pot.
    • Then in a pot, add the boiled dal, and ½ cup water to thin out the dal a bit.
    • Now to the dal, add about 1 teaspoon of salt, ⅛ teaspoon of turmeric powder, and 3 tablespoon of ghee, and mix it in.
    • Cook on medium flame for 5-10 minutes, till there is a proper boil.
    • Simple, easy and basic yellow dal (goda varan) is ready to serve.

    Notes

    1. You can use any yellow dal for this goda varan recipe. At first I used to use only toor dal, but these days I use toor and yellow moong dal in 50:50 ratio, to keep it lighter on the stomach.
    2. This is a ghee-heavy dal, but it’s meant to be that way..a comforting indulgence, once in a while. 🙂

    Serving Suggestion

Pair this with rice and a sabzi on the side, like this green beans stir fry or bhindi masala, for a wholesome and delicious meal.
