This Instant Pot Baby Potatoes recipe shares how to boil / steam baby potatoes in the Instant Pot, to get perfect fork-tender baby potatoes – every single time!
I love potatoes as much as the next person, but up until recently, I was pretty indifferent to baby potatoes. Mostly because, I never felt the need to use baby potatoes instead of my regular Idaho potatoes, that I love.
But recently I came across creamer baby potatoes in Costco, and thought of giving them a try. I got a mix bag of both yellow and red potatoes, and felt they were pretty great, both in terms of texture and taste.
I’ll be sharing some of the recipes I made using them soon. But I thought of starting with sharing how to boil them in the Instant Pot.
As it’s pretty simple and straightforward, much like pressure cooking regular Idaho potatoes that I shared in an earlier post.
Just set it up, and walk away. No constant monitoring or counting whistles. You can simply let the pressure release naturally, and the potatoes are ready when you need them.

How to Boil Baby Potatoes in Instant Pot
I am using creamer potatoes from The Little Potato Company, that I found in Costco. You can use whatever you prefer.
And here I am using about 18 baby potatoes, weighing a total of 1¼ pounds ~ 550 grams.
Step by Step Instructions
1. In the main steel insert of the Instant Pot – add 2 cups of water.
2. Place a short trivet in it. Or a small stand, to prop up the steamer basket.
It’s best to have a short trivet / stand so that the steamer basket is as close to the base of the Instant Pot as possible, without the base of the basket touching the base of the Instant Pot, or the water.
Unless you have a raised steamer basket, in which case you don’t need any trivet under it. In my case, my steamer basket is not raised, so I need a trivet under it.
3. Place steamer basket / insert or something like that on top of the trivet / stand.
You can also skip the steamer basket, and put the baby potatoes directly on the trivet. If you are using a trivet that is. As you see in the picture below, I am using a short stand, just to prop up the steamer basket.
Though when I boil regular potatoes, I place them directly on the trivet. But it’s easier to contain the baby potatoes in a steamer basket or something like that.
4. Properly wash the baby potatoes, and place them in the steamer basket on top of the trivet.
5. Close the Instant Pot lid, ensuring to seal it.
6. Pressure cook for 8 minutes on high pressure. When done, let all the pressure release naturally from the pot.
I prefer to use the regular pressure cook function to boil baby potatoes. But you can also use the steam function. I haven’t found much difference either way.

Key Recipe Notes
- Adjust pressure cook time by a few minutes up or down, based on if you want more well boiled or more firmer boiled potatoes, depending on what you will be using the baby potatoes for.
- You might even need to adjust the pressure cook time based on the size of the baby potatoes. For instance the baby potatoes I am using are 1½ – 2 inches in size, and they take about 8 minutes. You might need to adjust the pressure cook time by a few minutes up or down, based on if your baby potatoes are bigger or smaller than that.

Notes

- The steamer basket should be as close to the base of the Instant Pot as possible, without the base of the basket touching the base of the Instant Pot, or the water. A raised steamer basket will do the job well. And they are pretty common and easy to find. And if you have a raised basket, then you don’t need any trivet under it. In my case, my steamer basket is not raised, so I need a trivet under it.
- Alternatively, you can skip the steamer basket, and put the baby potatoes directly on the trivet. That’s what I always do when boiling regular potatoes in the Instant Pot. But it’s easier to contain the baby potatoes in a steamer basket or something like that.
- Adjust pressure cook time by a few minutes up or down, based on if you want more well boiled or more firmer boiled potatoes, depending on what you will be using the baby potatoes for.
